Everyone wants to keep a bright, healthy smile throughout adulthood. By practicing proper oral hygiene at home, you can help your teeth stay healthy, beautiful, and pain free. Good dental habits can help prevent cavities, tooth decay and gum disease.
Brush every morning and evening
Brush your teeth twice a day, for at least two minutes. Brushing helps remove plaque, a coating that covers your teeth and can cause tooth decay.
When you brush, make sure the brush reaches all surfaces of your teeth. Don’t forget to brush your tongue, since bacteria commonly gathers there and creates plaque.
Wait at least thirty minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. After you eat, your mouth is more acidic, which softens the enamel that covers and protects your teeth.
Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles or an electric toothbrush. Make sure to replace your toothbrush every three months.
Flossing daily can help prevent the buildup of plaque between your teeth and under your gums, which your toothbrush cannot reach. It doesn’t matter what type of floss you use. Pick a flavor you enjoy, and stick to a daily flossing schedule.
Eat a healthy diet
Limit foods that are high in sugar and starch, especially sticky candies. Sugars are consumed by oral bacteria, which fill your mouth with acid. This acid attacks your teeth, causing cavities. If you need to have your sugary treat, save it for mealtimes. This will give your mouth more time to neutralize the acids.
Avoid smoking. Tobacco stains your teeth and increases your chances of gum disease and mouth cancer. If you need help quitting smoking, speak with your doctor or see an addictions therapist.
